Our Weekly Watering Recommendations
This week, we’re preparing for an upcoming cold front in Bryan, College Station, and NW Houston areas. With temperatures dropping below freezing for the first time this season, it’s important to protect your lawn, trees, and landscape plants from frost damage. Depending on rainfall in your area, consider watering your lawn and landscape before the freeze arrives. The moisture will help the ground stay warmer than dry ground and insulate the root structure of your turf and plants. If you have any questions or concerns about your lawn, contact us!
Tree Protection
Texas trees can struggle through winter seasons with consecutive freeze periods which makes continued care throughout the year that much more important. Tree and shrub care programs are a crucial part of ensuring your trees are healthy and strong when the cool season comes around. A fews ways to assist your trees through harsh winter weather include covers, watering, or mulching. The AgriLife Extension offers more information on how to prepare and protect plants during a Texas freeze.
Additional Tips to Prepare for Upcoming Freezing Temps
- Disconnect outside hoses and cover faucets.
- Bring in plants and cover highly sensitive plants that are exposed, like anything tropical.
- Try wrapping your favorite plants with last season’s Christmas lights and covering them to keep some warmth under the blanket.
*Don’t forget to uncover them when the sun is out if temperatures reach above freezing. - Don’t forget about your furry friends during the freezing frenzy! Give them a hand by setting up warming stations such as heated blankets, wind shelters, and heat lamps. Also, be sure you are providing fresh water that is not frozen as our nighttime temperatures are dipping very low.
